Trading and the One Minute Manager

I've talked in the past about how I read books not necessarily related to trading, which can help you - one such example was Dale Carnegie's How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, which I wrote about here.

Another such book is The One Minute Manager. Originally published in the early 1980's, it became a business classic with over 15 million copies sold. Updated last year, can the The New One Minute Manager help your trading?

Dale Carnegie and thinking about losses

These days I am a voracious reader, not so much of books directly related to trading, but to those dealing with the mind, attitudes or psychology.

Interviews with, or autobiographies of top sportsmen or women are a good resource as well. When reading these, my mind automatically thinks about whatever is being discussed, and whether it can be applied to trading, and my own approach in particular. In that regard, I am always open to new or different ways of thinking.

A plan on how to get over a major drawdown or price shock

It is an unfortunate part of trading that people can suffer the traumatic experience of losing a significant part of their equity in one go. In extreme examples, some traders may even blow up their account. This may be as a result of some major unexpected news coming out. It may be as a result of your broker putting most of your money in a downtrending stock. It may be because you took a big position just before earnings were released which then gapped against you.

When something like this happens, your mindset will take a battering, and before you commit any fresh funds to the markets, you need to step away for a while and regroup. As hard as it may seem, how you deal emotionally with what has happened is of paramount importance, and may even determine whether you can make money in the future.
